8 best organic fertilizers for successful organic farming

8 best organic fertilizers for successful organic farming

When we talk about organic farming, organic fertilizers are equally important as other things. Organic fertilizers are the best companion of organic crops. they are just like soulmates.

Organic fertilizers is is one of important component of soil preparation

Why fertilizers are important for agriculture?

Plants need few macro and some micro nutrients for their growth like humans.

However, both plants and humans need different nutrients. here we will restrict ourselves to plant nutrients.

Macro nutrients of plants

Nitrogen is the primary nutrients for plant growth. almost every part of the plant presents above the soil (leaves, steps, etc), use this nutrient for their growth.

Phosphorus is the nutrient that helps in the plant’s roots’ growth. it also promotes flowering and fruit production.

Potassium makes plants tolerant to unexpected environmental hazards. like drought, severe heat, cold, etc. It is available in soil in more amount when its pH ranges between 6.0 (slightly acidic) to 7( neutral).

Micro nutrients of plants

There are 7 most important micronutrients for plants present in soil. These are:-

  1. boron (B),
    • Affects flowering and fruiting, pollen germination, cell division, and active salt absorption
  2.  zinc (Zn),
    • Its deficiency responsible for the stunted growth of leaves also known as “little leaves”
  3. manganese (Mn),
    • Necessary for photosynthesis
  4. Iron (Fe)
    • Necessary for photosynthesis
    • Copper deficiency can be responsible for promoting an iron deficiency
  5. copper (Cu),
    • Important for photosynthesis
  6. molybdenum (Mo),
    • Important in building amino acids, which is responsible for protein formation
  7. chlorine (Cl)
    • Necessary for ionic balance and water absorption

However, they constituents only 1% of soil weight, and through fertilizers, we are not going to address them. here we will restrict our discussion to Macronutrients.

Let’s start today’s organic discussion…..

Why should we use organic fertilizers of chemical fertilizers?

Its an genuine question becouse we usually saw that organic fertilizers sometimes costs higher than chemical fertilizers. but we should still use it becouse of following reasons

  1. Natural source of NPK ( nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium)
  2. Organic fertilizers maintain the pH of the soil
  3. It increases the biological activities of soil
  4. Eco-friendly for organisms like earthworms
  5. Maintains soil salinity
  6. Retain soil moisture
  7. Reduce leaching of nutrients
  8. Increase aeration is soil

Apart from these, there are many other benefits of using organic fertilizers. while chemical fertilizers are also good sources of NPK but they also do following things

  • Disbalance pH,
  • Harmful for an organism like earthworms
  • Not eco-friendly
  • Increase the salinity of soil
  • Easily leach and reach to groundwater and contaminate it

So, now i hope you are agree with me why you should use organic fertilizers.

How to identify organic from inorganic fertilizers?

Identifying organic from inorganic fertilizers is very simple and easy. Listen carefully, when you go shopping for purchasing organic fertilizers, read the level. If its composition is written like 10-15-10 or 10-10-10 then it’s chemical fertilizer.

These numbers shows proportion of NPK.

If its level shows numbers like 4-12-0 or 13-1-0 then it is organic fertilizers. Actually, organic fertilizers do not have any definite chemical combinations they can vary from product to product.

Best organic fertilizers for organic fertilizers

Compost

Compost is a very important component for plant growth. It provides foods for organisms, creates conditions for biological activity, increases the water holding capacity of the soil and it also contains micronutrients for plant growth.

Ideal NPK composition of should be around 2-1-1

Earthworm casting

Earthworm casting is best organic fertilizers for flowering plants and edible fruits

Best NPK composition should be 2-1-1

Bone meal

Bone meal is the best source of phosphorus. As I mentioned above, phosphorus is very important for good root growth.

Right NPK composition for use can range between 3-15-0 to 4-12-0

Blood meal

A blood meal is a good source of nitrogen. you can use it while plotting the soil. You can also give directly to plants monthly basis.

Best NPK composition should be 13-1-0

Alfalfa meal

Alfalfa is awesome fertilizers for rose farming. It increases microbial activity in great proportion. hence you can also use it

Right NPK proportion can be 2.5-05-01

Cottonseed Meal

The best source of organic nitrogen after a blood meal. But it can acidify the soil.

So, if your soil is already acidic then avoid this.

But if your soil is basic (pH ranges between 7-14) then you should use this because it will benefit you in two ways;

  • It increases the nitrogen content of the soil
  • It also neutralizes the soil

Feather meal

Feather meal can take few months to break biologically but it is one of the best sources of nitrogen. you can easily get it from a poultry farm or any shop that sells it.

Ideal NPK composition can be range between 7-0-0 to 12-0-0

Rock phosphate

Rock phosphate is a mineral rock powder. It is a good source of phosphorous. However, it can also contain other minerals like calcium.

NPK composition should be 0-2-0

So these are the 8 best organic fertilizers which can make you a successfull organic farmer.

Hope you have like it

Thank you and happy organic life

Stay tuned!
